Long Title: An Act to recognise and vest the forest rights and occupation in forest land in forest dwelling Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers who have been residing in such forests for generations but whose rights could not be recorded; to provide for a framework for recording the forest rights so vested and the nature of evidence required for such recognition and vesting in respect of forest land.

Section 1: Short title, extent and commencement.
    (1) This Act may be called the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.
     (2) It extends to the whole of India 1***.
     (3) It shall come into force on such date2 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
