Long Title: An Act to foster the development and ensure the efficient maintenance of an Indian mercantile marine in a manner best suited to serve the national interests and for that purpose to establish a National Shipping Board to provide for the registration, certification, safety and security of Indian ships and generally to amend and consolidate the law relating to merchant shipping.

Section 173: Certain ships to carry medical officer.
    1[(1) Every foreign-going ship carrying--
         (a) more than the prescribed number of persons (including the crew), shall have on board as part of her complement a medical officer possessing such qualifications; and
         (b) less than the prescribed number of persons shall have such medical facilities,
as may be prescribed, in accordance with the provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention.]
     (2) Nothing in this section shall apply to 2[a special trade passenger ship] or a pilgrim ship.
