Act Name: The Merchant Shipping Act, 1958

Long Title: An Act to foster the development and ensure the efficient maintenance of an Indian mercantile marine in a manner best suited to serve the national interests and for that purpose to establish a National Shipping Board to provide for the registration, certification, safety and security of Indian ships and generally to amend and consolidate the law relating to merchant shipping.

Section 208: On change of master, documents to be handed over to successor.
    (1) If during the progress of a voyage the master of any Indian ship is removed or superseded or for any other reason quits the ship and is succeeded in the command by some other person, he shall deliver to his successor the various documents relating to the navigation of the ship and the crew thereof which are in his custody.
     (2) Such successor shall immediately on assuming the command of the ship enter in the official log book a list of the documents so delivered to him.
