If the defendant shall appear on any subsequent day to which the hearing of the suit may be postponed under the last preceding section, the Collector may upon such conditions, if any, as to costs or otherwise as he may think proper, allow the defendant to be heard, in answer to the suit as if he had appeared on the day fixed for his attendance.
