About this Act
An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to merchant shipping to ensure compliance with India's obligation under the maritime treaties and international instruments to which India is a party and also to ensure the development of Indian shipping and efficient maintenance of Indian mercantile marine in a manner best suited to serve the national interest and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
No seafarer belonging to an Indian vessel wherever it may be, or to any other vessel while in India, shall knowingly,—
(a) do anything tending to the immediate loss or destruction of, or serious damage to, the vessel, or tending immediately to endanger the life of, or to cause injury to any person belonging to or onboard the vessel; or
(b) refuse or omit to do any lawful act proper and requisite to be done by him for preserving the vessel from immediate loss, destruction or serious damage, or for preserving any person belonging to or onboard the vessel from danger to life or from injury.
